GCSE English Language can feel overwhelming. With two papers, unfamiliar texts, different question types and a significant amount of exam technique to master, knowing where to start isn't always easy.
The GCSE English Language Exam Series breaks the preparation down into four focused sessions. Students first learn the techniques they need, then apply them through exam-style practice before consolidating their understanding.
Learn
Understand the paper, question types and techniques needed to approach each question confidently.

Put new knowledge into practice using carefully selected extracts and exam-style questions.
Consolidate
Strengthen understanding, address weaknesses and develop strategies students can take into the examination.
Four focused sessions
Each paper is covered across two sessions — first learning the techniques, then applying and consolidating them.
This session introduces Paper 1 and develops the knowledge students need to approach each question with confidence.
Students will explore:
- Understanding the structure of Paper 1
- Understanding the different question types
- Reading and analysing creative texts
- Using evidence effectively
- Exploring language and structural choices
- Developing analytical responses
- Approaching the creative writing task
Students apply the techniques from Session 1A to exam-style questions and consolidate their understanding through guided practice.
Students will explore:
- Applying analytical techniques
- Practising exam-style questions
- Improving the use of evidence
- Developing stronger explanations
- Structuring responses effectively
- Applying creative writing techniques
- Identifying and addressing common weaknesses
Students explore the structure of Paper 2 and learn how to respond effectively to non-fiction and literary non-fiction texts.
Students will explore:
- Understanding the structure of Paper 2
- Understanding the different question types
- Comparing writers' viewpoints and perspectives
- Analysing language and structural choices
- Selecting and using evidence
- Developing clear analytical responses
- Approaching the writing task effectively
Students put their Paper 2 knowledge into practice, working through exam-style questions and refining their responses.
Students will explore:
- Applying Paper 2 techniques
- Comparing sources effectively
- Developing analytical explanations
- Using evidence precisely
- Structuring extended responses
- Developing convincing written arguments
- Consolidating exam strategies
